Speed bumps are a common feature in roads and parking lots that are used to encourage drivers to slow down.  These sneaky little bumps in the road range between 3-4 inches in height and are typically made of asphalt.

Illusionary Speed Bumps

Every great once in a while, we get a customer request that completely confounds us.  This is what happened when a good customer of ours requested that we install an illusionary speed bump at their location.  While doing some research to find out exactly what an “illusionary speed bump” was, we came across some interesting information.  Here’s what we found out.

  1. Illusionary Speed Bumps are basically fake speed bumps that create a 3-D image on the road or parking lot.  They are either a painted image or a flat piece of plastic that is applied to the pavement.
  2. These fake speed bumps are being tested for their effectiveness in cities around the United States and in Canada.
  3. Canada used a controversial illusionary image of a child chasing a ball into the street as a way to slow down drivers.

Below is a picture of the finished illusionary speed bump that we painted for our customer.  What do you think about the idea of these speed bumps?  Do you think they would slow you down?
