That’s right folks.  What better day to talk about speed humps than on hump day?

The words speed bump and speed hump are often used interchangeably, but let me assure you, there is a distinct difference.  While both are speed controlling devices put in place to avoid serious injury to pedestrians, the characteristics of each are different. Speed bumps are typically 3 to 6 inches in height with a travel length of 6 in. to 3 ft.  Their abrupt design should slow vehicles to 5 mph or less and can sometimes stop them completely.  Speed humps, on the other hand, have a gradual, gentler, design.  They are typically 2 to 4 inches in height with a travel length of 12-15 ft.  The gradual rise of a speed hump is enough to slow a vehicle to 15 or 20 mph, without stopping the traffic flow.

Today we are going to focus specifically on speed humps.  Speed humps are ideal for residential roads, parking lots and garages, school zones, hospitals, retail stores, airports and anywhere a slow traffic flow is required.  Speed humps can either be asphalt or rubber.  Asphalt speed humps are permanent, while rubber speed humps can be permanent or temporary.

We’ve been seeing more and more recycled rubber speed humps specified on new construction prints and we recently installed four of them at a local hospital.  Obviously, the fact that these speed humps are environmentally friendly make them a great choice.  They are also easy to install, light weight, don’t chip or break in high heat, and can be easily removed to allow for snow removal or parking lot design changes. These rubber speed humps have an interlocking, tongue in groove design that allows expansion to any road width.  They are embedded with highly reflective highway tape, making them visible even at night.
